Urinary incontinence in Men – FDA Cleared Treatment

As we think about Movember and some of the challenges faced by men post prostatectomy, there is help for related issues.

Gents, there is new technology helping to strengthen the pelvic floor

Many men and women suffer the embarrassment and indignity of incontinence associated with a weak pelvic floor. Often this condition creeps up on you starting with the odd leak or dribble during exercise, sneezing or laughing and going on to become a much bigger problem.

The primary cause is the prostate. An enlarged prostate after a prostatectomy, bladder surgery or other treatments for prostate cancer can all contribute to male incontinence and erectile dysfunction and the ageing process can also lead to problems. Other contributing factors leading to male incontinence can include some neurological disorders, obesity, smoking and family history. Excessive coughing or being overweight can put pressure on the bladder and lead to stress incontinence. Urge incontinence occurs when you need to urinate frequently or there is leakage when the bladder is full. Some people have both these symptoms.

The pelvic floor muscles form the lower part of the pelvis and support the pelvic organs, including the bladder, rectum and prostate. When pelvic floor weakness occurs, it can cause incontinence problems but it may lead to erectile dysfunction. This can be very stressful if it is persistent. Complications resulting from erectile dysfunction can include: an unsatisfactory sex life, stress or anxiety, embarrassment or low self-esteem, relationship problems, or the inability to get your partner pregnant.

EMSELLA can help

The good news is that there is a new Clinic treatment which can help to improve the strength of the pelvic floor muscles thus combatting these symptoms. It is called The Emsella Chair and has been FDA cleared for the treatment of urinary incontinence in men.  You take the treatment seated and fully clothed and it only takes 30 minutes. There is no downtime and you get on with your daily activities afterwards. Gradually over the 6 treatments you start to see and improvement with the best results evident after a couple of months. Some people will need a top up session or two at this point but often the 6 sessions are sufficient.

Are there any contraindications?

You are not able to use the chair if you have a pacemaker, any metal implants or plates or if you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

How does the chair work?

EMSELLA utilises HIFEM (High Intensity Focussed Electromagnetic technology) which stimulates the whole muscle to exercise in such an intense way that it induces thousands of supramaximal pelvic floor contractions. As a result, patients attain greater neuromuscular control over the pelvic floor. By gaining control over the muscle that supports the entire pelvic region including the bladder, rectum, and prostate.

EMSELLA works really well for men or women suffering with stress incontinence or who want to improve the quality of their intimate life.

Scientific research shows that 95% of incontinent patients reported significant improvement in day to day life and 85% improvement was observed in overall intimate satisfaction. Remembering to do pelvic floor exercises and then doing them effectively is really hard. The Emsella Chair is the lift we all need to feel the best version of ourselves and more confident in every day life
