This In Conversation With interview was a milestone for us; as well as having the pleasure of talking with Lucy Taylor, an investment management specialist, she was also our 60th interviewee!
Lucy’s early inspiration was from her late Grandmother who encouraged her to challenge herself by studying for an economics degree and then to take up an undergraduate position at the start of her career. Her grandmother’s entrepreneurship as a working mother was a lightbulb moment for Lucy. During our interview, we came onto the topic of her Power Decade, mindfulness and a career transformation into Evelyn Partners.
A journey started from a young age
We all know that dreams aren’t built in one day. In fact, it’s the journey you take that leads to bigger and more successful stories. For Lucy, her dreams started when she was a young girl and was interested in her grandmother’s investments. One in particular turned out to be a good financial move indeed. Gran bought shares in Corona, a company that back in the day delivered a variety of products to peoples’ homes, much like the milkman delivered more than just milk.
As her grandmother’s investment grew and flourished, Lucy became fascinated in investments and the spark was lit. She says:
“When I discovered this, as a little girl, I was absolutely fascinated by how much this nest egg had grown from investing in a business that was growing and evolving.”
During her younger years, Lucy saw herself in the world of financial investments. She decided to study A-level economics and continued that at university, gaining her degree. Not long afterwards, Lucy secured a graduate job and her career began. But as the years passed, she knew there was something missing; not so much a change of career as she enjoyed the world of finance and investments. It was that she knew she could offer more to her clients. Indeed, she says:
“I could’ve stayed there cruising quite happily but I wanted more, and wanted to give more.”
Next stop, Evelyn Partners, where Lucy and her team, or ‘tribe’ as she calls it, are unique in the way they help clients manage their wealth and accounts.
Lucy’s Power Decade
When we interviewed Lucy, we were a matter of weeks away from launching our new Your Power Decade flagship conference. So, we couldn’t resist asking Lucy about her Power Decade; where she was now, her plans for the future and where she saw herself in a year’s time.
This is what she told us…
Lucy has a new passion – practising mindfulness. The art of mindfulness has grown significantly over the last few years with many people recognising how important it is to prioritise our physical and mental well-being.
After looking after two small children and trying to juggle a work-life balance, but often falling short of the ideal, Lucy found that her health and well-being was suffering. It was also having an impact on her family. Not one to sit back and let it happen, she chose to take part in an 8-week mindful course.
Well, she hasn’t looked back! Yes, the course opened up her mind to new adventures, new skills and talents, and gave her a renewed sense of purpose. But it comes with a caveat – she quickly realised that practising mindfulness takes time to perfect, particularly as you get older. This led her to her next Power Decade chapter – going out there and teaching children and young adults not only what she’s learned, but the tips and tools to put mindfulness into practice.
Teaching her way to ice bath therapy!
In 2019, Lucy enrolled on a course to learn how to teach mindfulness. She explains:
“It was a way of deepening my understanding of mindfulness, its practices, and finding a different way to reflect on what I had learnt.”
It wasn’t long before teaching children and young adults the skills she had learned boosted her own self-confidence; it was time to try something new. Never one to shy away from a challenge that’s out of the ordinary, a variety of unique new activities were added to her repertoire, including ice bath therapy! Admittedly not for the faint-hearted, Lucy champions this therapy for improving your physical and mental well-being. If it works for elite athletes and sports people, why not for us!Listen to Lucy’s career journey and discover more about her own Power Decade and see if it resonates with yours by tuning in to our full interview with Lucy Taylor at Evelyn Partners.
