Boosting your career journey may well have been one of your New Year resolutions. January and February are often a time when many people consider a job change, focus on promotion, decide on upskilling, or even step into the unknown by starting a side hustle or business.

A new year can be the catalyst, or driving force, to taking your career to the next level. Indeed, 22% of workers look for a new job in January, according to recent research. But for some people, wanting to do it and knowing how to do it are two different things. It can be a big challenge but they are not insurmountable. We’ve put together our ten top tips to help you achieve your career goals and navigate the challenges on the way.

10 tips for a successful career journey

A successful career journey brings with it plenty of challenges but also lots of benefits. We all need a bit of guidance at times. Our top ten tips are designed to help you achieve your career ambitions.

1.     Improve your skills

Whether you’ve been in your current position for a long time, you want to enhance your career or get back into the workplace after a break, there are many benefits of upskilling. These include expanding your career options, gaining knowledge and expertise and boosting your confidence. The technical skills employers are looking for include data analysis, social media, SEO, project management, digital marketing and AI. Consider online courses, attend workshops, join an apprenticeship, enrol at a college or work with a mentor

2.     Prioritise Networking

Building a strong professional network is a key to career success. New connections can open you to various professional opportunities. Look for a local networking group, in-person or online (many networking groups today offer both). Attend events, conferences and workshops related to your industry. Create a LinkedIn profile then connect with like-minded people and join online groups.

3.     Learn from others

A mentor can make a big difference to your career journey. Through their insights, experience and advice, they can help guide you along your career path as well as navigate the challenges along the way

4.     Rebrand Yourself

A key to career success is learning to be flexible, adaptable and resilient. Be open to change and embrace it, such as new technologies, new processes and shifts in industry trends. Aim to always be positive, adopt a proactive work ethic and be prepared to bounce back from challenges.

5.     Show Leadership

If your aim is a management role or even a seat on the board, start by demonstrating leadership skills. Seek out opportunities to take on lead project roles. Ask an experienced leader to act as your mentor. Sign up for leadership workshops or training programmes. These activities show your commitment to your role and the company, demonstrating you have potential for future progression.

6. Set Short and Long Term Goals

Set out a clear vision of where you want to be in your career, both short-term and long-term. Whether it’s upskilling to secure a new job, finding a mentor for career growth within your current company or building your network to open up new opportunities, your goals form the basis of your career journey.

7. Update your CV

Whether you are seeking a new job or a career change, it’s always a good idea to keep your CV up-to-date. As you acquire new skills, achieve qualifications and expand your experience, add it to your CV and always be ready for new opportunities. This extends to your professional online profiles, such as LinkedIn. Share your insights with others and connect with industry experts to enhance your online presence.

8. Keep your digital skills updated

It’s a digital world and technology plays a key role in most workplaces today. Make sure you stay competitive by keeping your digital skills updated by learning the latest software and tools you need for your role.

9. Stay Updated in Your Industry

Industry trends change and develop continuously. Whether it’s the latest product development, market demands and trends, or emerging technology, stay updated by following relevant experts and thought leaders. Subscribe to leading publications or podcasts. Attend webinars, conferences and seminars and engage in lifelong learning.

Achieving a successful career means meeting the demands of a busy life, and combating the challenges along the way. But you can’t do this if you don’t look after yourself.
