Parenting teenagers and young adults in uncertainty

How to support our children’s education, resilience and career planning

Thank you to everyone who attended our latest webinar on ‘Parenting teenagers and young adults in uncertainty’ and were joined an amazing panel of speakers, all experts in their fields.

The last three months have been very stressful for many families. Arguably, the hardest hit during this lockdown period have been those sitting exams, choosing further study, or entering the workplace.

With increased stress and uncertainty about their future, teenagers and young adults will be in need of more support around their education, resilience and career planning.

 Our panel included:

  • Arabella Davies of Their Best Years
  • Pauline den Hoedt who teaches the Thrive programme
  • Alex Webb from Flying Start XP
  • And Charlotte Kennedy of Atticus Rose

The panel covered a range of topics and areas including:

  • How to help your child to gain closure on this unprecedented change to their academic end of year
  • The role of tutoring and academic mentoring
  • Role modelling for our children
  • Resilience and the importance of building strong relationships and communicating to meet the needs of your teens and young adults
  • Opportunities for school and university leavers

Our thanks to each of the panellists for generously sharing their insights and experiences.  The response was tremendous and engagement fantastic.  We learnt so much but would make the following 4 observations and conclusions

  • Life is unpredictable.  During this period of lockdown, our children will have learnt how to cope and adapt to whatever life throws at them.
  • We can be great role models for our children.  Note that 5% of life is the event itself, 95% is how we respond to the event.  We have the power to choose what we want to focus on.
  • Relationships, self-awareness and awareness of others are key.  We all do things differently.
  • Take responsibility for your future.  There are opportunities out there.  We all need to think more creatively and laterally than we did previously.
