Inspiring Words from Our Upcoming Keynote Speaker at Your Power Decade 2025

At Really Helpful Club, we believe in the power of connection, confidence, and reinvention — at every stage of life. That’s why we’re so excited to welcome the remarkable Alison Cork as our keynote speaker at this year’s Your Power Decade Conference on Thursday 9th October 2025.

Alison’s story is one of transformation, strength, and new beginnings. In her own words, here’s how she rewired her second act — and why it’s never too late to start:

Everyone has a different journey to self discovery and self improvement and mine came through food. As a former restaurant critic I thought I knew all about food, but it wasn’t until I had packed on 5 stone and was feeling terrible about myself that I made any attempt to change the situation. At that time I believed that weight loss was about doing some exercise, something I had largely neglected in my life, so it came as a bit of a surprise to learn that this is not the case. Certainly exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle, but the bottom line is that you cannot out train a bad diet. Or putting it another way, what you eat is 80 per cent of your weight loss journey, exercise only 20 per cent.

Once I had grasped that concept, stripped out refined sugar and bad carbs, reduced my alcohol intake, increased my protein intake and started eating more fruit and veg, the weight started to drop off, aided and abetted by weight training. You may think the story ends there. But actually that’s where it began. The moment I lost weight, everything changed. I gained confidence, took up new physical challenges, made new friends, felt more positive, started a new business, wrote a book and more. Put simply, I became a happier more fulfilled person, much less bothered about material possessions and much more focused on life experiences. So at 62 I now feel I have a new beginning ahead of me, and that’s something I never thought I’d hear myself say. Self discovery can happen at any moment if your life, and it’s never too late.
