Decisions Decisions Decisions!

Listen more to your dreams than your fears. Become a Resilient Leader – Having the tools and strategies to support you, so you can make the right decision, with the right people, at the right time.

What’s your next decision?

Do you have the levels of resiliency and leadership, of yourself as well as others, to make a decision that will serve you well? Is fear getting in the way?

Wherever you are on your career journey:- new role, a promotion, returning to work, starting a family or empty nest, we are all looking for success. BUT what is success? What does SUCCESS mean to you? Is it different now from what it was?

Does it mean?

I keep moving up the pay scale?

AND / OR

I’m hungry for that next promotion?

AND / OR

I am the best version of myself?

AND / OR

I work for a FTSE 100 company?

AND / OR

I am present with my family at all times?

AND / OR

My work fulfils me and gives me purpose?

AND / OR

The work I do connects with my values?

AND / OR

I am a respected leader who is honest and authentic?

The list and reasons are many, and people measure success in very very different ways.

Karen Brady (CBE) talked, in October at the Women in Tech and Business Expo, about how her ambitions changed as she grew older. Initially, it was about getting a paycheck, then it was about getting a bigger one, then about stepping into leadership, stepping into an all-male meeting room in the world of football when men and women were kept separate! (It’s an interesting story if you like a good read!) Karen Brady is still a power-house in the boardroom,  she has a family and still continues to push through boundaries, and although ambitious, her ambition has changed as she engages more around who she is and what she does. Using her position to support purposeful impact.

So the first question, when making any decision about your career or next steps is, ‘What does SUCCESS mean to you’?

Describe it, visualise it.

What are you doing? Who are you doing it with? What are people saying? What are people seeing? What impact do you have when you step into the room?

Fully understanding what this version of yourself looks like, then becomes your beacon, giving you the Clarity of Direction to push through with determination. Fear subsides as you start to believe the possible. With this determination, every decision you make helps you get there. New habits are formed to help you get there. You share with people WHO you want to be and they will help you get there.

So WHO do you want to be?

Craig Groeschel on his Leadership Podcast recently said ‘instead of setting goals that focus on “what” you want to do this year, set them around “who” you want to become.

You might want to become a…

  • A leader* who loves people
  • A leader who develops others
  • A leader who’s known for your integrity.
  • A disciplined leader that people admire and respect.

*whenever I talk about being a leader, please remember this ‘Everyone is a leader because everyone influences someone.’ (Robert Maxwell). Whether you’re leading yourself, others or your family, you are a leader.

Growing leadership muscle personally or professionally, knowing the type of person you want to be, will help you make those decisions.

  • If you want to be more confident
  • If you want to be heard
  • If you want to lose that imposter syndrome
  • If you want to have more self-belief
  • If you want to go for that promotion or turn down that role
  • If you want to believe in your strengths more
  • If you want to have more positive relationship, work and home
  • If you want to beable to say ‘no more’

It starts with you.

You don’t have to be great to start, you do have to start to be great’. Zig Ziggler

And to start, it often comes down to giving ourselves permission to do so. Letting go of that fear. Courage is just on the other side if you can push through.

Easier said than done right?

So this year, my challenge to you is to grow your muscle in self-awareness, leadership and resilience. With these in your tool kit, you will:-

  • have coping strategies to support you
  • know how to ask for help and not see it as a weakness,
  • know the importance of looking after yourself so you can serve others better
  • know how to get the best from others
  • know how to rebalance
  • know how to make robust decisions
  • know your impact on others when you step into the room
  • know your clarity of direction
  • know what success looks like to you and how to get there.

Maybe what you think is your measurement of success, isn’t what it once was.

Wherever you are going and whatever decisions you make, make sure you understand your values. Know who you want to be. This will drive everything forward.

If you would like support in any of the above, we would love to chat with you. Building muscle in awareness, leaders and resilience is what we do. (alex@tlrdynamics.com)
