How to Best Support the Next Generation

by | Tuesday, 8th July 2025

We all want to give our children a strong start. Whether it’s helping them through university, supporting them onto the property ladder, or offering a financial cushion for life’s unexpected twists and turns—many of us dream of passing something meaningful on. But how do we do that in a way that’s sustainable, fair, and empowering?

“Supporting the next generation is about more than giving money—it’s about giving clarity, confidence, and choice,” says Catriona Reed, Head of Private Clients at 7IM.

It starts with understanding their needs

No two children are the same. Some may be highly independent, others may need more support. Rather than offering blanket support, the first step is understanding what kind of help is most useful—and when.

“Have the conversation early,” Catriona advises. “And keep it rooted in their goals, not just yours.”

Timing is everything

From gifting deposits to funding school fees, the earlier the support is given, the more likely it is to help loved ones flourish. This needs to be balanced with your own financial security.

“A well-structured financial plan gives you the freedom to help others, while still looking after yourself,” says Catriona.

Teach financial responsibility alongside financial support

Money without guidance can be a burden. Include your children in conversations about saving, investing, and protection. Support might include:

  • Junior ISAs or Lifetime ISAs
  • Mortgage and pension education
  • Encouraging long-term thinking

Final Thought

Supporting the next generation isn’t about giving it all away. It’s about passing on values, resilience, and opportunity.

At Really Helpful Club, we’re proud to work with 7IM, whose team led by Catriona Reed, helps families plan with generosity and confidence.
