BREAKFAST
‘What do I eat for breakfast’ is probably the most common question I get asked. We are now essentially eating dessert for breakfast rather than a nourishing, sustaining meal designed to break our fast. ????
????Doughnuts, croissants, chocolate spread, sugared cereal, breakfast bars, are all mostly empty calorie foods which spike our blood sugar and leave us feeling hungry or in a food slump. If we look to our European or Asian neighbours, they eat varied breakfasts which include protein and good fats. Where have we gone so wrong?
????Commercial cereals are ‘fortified’ with vitamins and minerals because the contents are essentially flavoured cardboard! Have you ever read the ingredients and seen the sugar content?
????Instead of eating a wholly carbohydrate-based breakfast, try combining protein, good fats and vegetables or fruits for your first meal. You will feel full, not suffer sugar highs and lows and be sustained for longer. Sending kids to school on carbohydrate and fruit breakfasts is like giving them a sugar high and then expecting them to sit still and be able to learn well – it won’t happen!! ☹️
Ideas include:
????Eggs in all their forms – add vegetables, herbs or spices to make them more interesting, smoked salmon, avocado, turkey or ham ????Frittatas ????Last night’s leftovers
????Bacon, tomato, avocado sandwich
Nut butters on toast (cashew, almond, macadamia)
????‘Deliciously Ella’ Nut Butter Balls, a pack of those and an apple is also a great afternoon snack
????Granola with nuts, seeds, nut milk, flaxseed, berries and a scoop of protein powder or nut butter
????Oats, Amaranth or Millet porridge – add fibre, protein and a good fat
????Chia pudding
Pancakes made from eggs, crushed almonds, mashed banana
Shakes made with protein powder and added fruit, vegetables or herbs. Rotate the greens and fruits you use. Throw in limes or lemon. Think variety. Nut butter or nuts?
????Try to leave at least 12 hours after your evening meal before breakfast so that your body has a chance to clean and heal itself. (Those with eating disorders, metabolic issues, hormonal issues, who are pregnant or breastfeeding please use caution)
